Manhattan Districts 1/2/5 Sanitation Garage / 2016

ArchitectDattner Architects and WXY collaboration

Gracing the Hudson River waterfront in lower Manhattan, The Manhattan Districts 1/2/5 Garage accommodates over 150 sanitation vehicles for three different districts. The expansive structure also houses vehicle wash facilities for each district, as well as centralized fueling and repair facilities. The building boasts a green roof to soften views from neighboring buildings and provide storm water retention, and a high performance facade system with solar shading optimized for the site orientation.

Front was involved from design development through construction and developed the design for an economical, light-weight glazing enclosure that can be replaced from the inside. The resulting custom façade includes an exterior perforated aluminum louver system that allows views from the interior, while also providing solar shading from the south and west, and serves to define the visual identity of the building.

The garage won the AIA NY Architecture Honor Award, AIA NYS Design Award for Excellence, and achieved LEED Gold certification.
