Theory Ginza / 2013

This retail fa├žade, which is situated on a prominent corner of the shopping district of Ginza, Japan, is clad in brickwork with a skin-on foamed aluminum product. What upon first glance appears to be brickwork, is actually a material consisting of a series of small open areas and swirling solid areas that mingle together to create unique texture and appearance. The resulting storefront has clean lines and an alluring reflectivity.

Front evaluated the stability of the foamed-on-aluminum material used, and worked to conceptualize and to detail the pre-fabrication approach in order to allow the curtain wall to be installed as though it were a rainscreen. Our scope also included the evaluation of the foamed aluminum cladding product to ensure its durability and longevity.
