The project is the first building of many in a planned, phased development for the Children’s Hospital of Philadelphia on a site just south of the heart of downtown Philadelphia along the Schuylkill River. The 25 story tower is approximately 400 ft (120 m) tall and includes research and administrative office space.
Front was commissioned to provide Facade Consultancy services to assist the Design Team in the design, detailing, preliminary analysis and procurement of the curtain wall, lobby glazing, entrance canopies, and terracotta piers. Pelli Clarke Pelli Architects are the Design Architects and Ballinger are the Executive Architects.
The curtain wall consists of unitized aluminum and glass panels with extruded aluminum tubes hung outboard of the air and water barrier and a custom gradient frit on the glazing. The lower four floors feature extruded terracotta panels, which have been incorporated into the unitized system and into the piers surrounding the arcade at the lobby. The curtain wall units also have stabilization anchors to facilitate maintenance and facade access via an exterior platform.
